My Photos
Personal Background
Born in Winnetka, Illinois, Porter was an amateur photographer since his childhood. He enjoyed taking photographs of the Great Spruce Head Island that his family owned. Porter went on to receive degrees from Harvard in chemical engineering and medicine.
Style
Porter taught himself how to make his own prints when he was a teenager, and became well known for well balanced landscapes. In 1939 he began experimenting with color such as dye transfer printing. He remained with this type of color control for the rest of his life and became well known for this.
Philosophy
He became well known for photographing ecologically significant places and natural scenery. He published many books photographing places like Glen Canyon in Utah. His message was to expose these places that people have never been to.
Influence
He has influenced my work through his use of nature. That's why one of my favorite units was landscapes. I also enjoyed his use of color and the great detail it brings to the photo.
Compare and Contrast
I thought my photos were fairly similar, besides the fact that there was a lot more snow in these pictures. In the pictures with water in them both photos had reflections in them. I felt that the experimentation value of the pictures was strong, and the different points of view that the pictures presented was very experimental.
Personal Artist Statement
The images I have correlate with the pictures that Porter took. I tried to take a pictures that looked as identical as possible. I wanted to show how the seasons change how we view a place or environment. You can see how elements of an image can change through the seasons. Reflections change when the seasons change and the first image is an example of that. Also the color and hue of the image change. The second image shows how the color of nature can change with the seasons.
